THE MUSIC PROJECT and Camp Trillium announce a live performance and the release of teen album
Ten Camp Trillium youth will perform original songs at a release party for their self-titled CD on June 5th 2010 at the YMCA of Greater Toronto. The CD is a product of the teens’ participation in THE MUSIC PROJECT (TMP), a songwriting program that leads youth on a journey from raw talent to recording to concert. The event is a fundraiser for the program and a celebration of the teens’ compositions.
Musicians Garrry Norman and Tiiu Millistver founded TMP in 2009. This program is a partnership with Camp Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre, an organization that reaches children from all over Ontario with cancer by providing them and their families with fun and enriching recreational opportunities.
Community has rallied behind TMP to make this year’s pilot project a reality and lay the groundwork for future programs with communities in need. The Toronto Tabla Ensemble provided space for the workshops. Jason Collett, Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson of Zeus, and Kieran Roy of Arts and Crafts joined the teens to provide feedback about their songs. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by students and staff at The Audio Recording Academy (TARA).
TMP has received funding from The Ontario Arts Council for a second Camp Trillium program and interest in partnerships from Ontario schools. TMP is also involved with youth in Haiti and is currently creating programming for them.
Since September 2009, the Camp Trillium group has met monthly to write songs, record and prepare for the upcoming performance. Every member brings a diverse twist to the group’s indie-acoustic vibe, resulting in an energetic and eclectic album that is a testament to the teens’ high level of skill and effort.
